About Castle Pines

Castle Pines incorporated in February 2008 (originally as “Castle Pines North,” renamed in 2010) and has grown from about 10,000 residents at incorporation to roughly 17,000 today. In 2019, it became Colorado’s 102nd home-rule municipality. The city remains a secluded community in Douglas County, surrounded by more than 15,000 acres of dedicated open space, the exclusive Castle Pines Village, and the Rueter-Hess Reservoir.
Golf lovers will appreciate two premier courses: The Ridge at Castle Pines, a Troon-managed course, and The Sanctuary Golf Course, widely regarded as one of the most coveted rounds of golf in Colorado. Sanctuary, owned by RE/MAX co-founder Dave Liniger, is a private club, but visitors can still take in the views by driving to Daniel’s Park with a picnic and binoculars for a look at the course from the ridge.

Boundaries & Geography

The City of Castle Pines spans about 6,114 acres (9.55 square miles), just west of Interstate 25 at Exit 188 (Castle Pines Parkway), about 20 miles south of Denver and 7 miles north of Castle Rock. The city’s footprint has grown since its original 2008 incorporation (2,437 acres): a 2009 annexation added 3,342 acres east of I-25, known as the Canyons property.

Rueter-Hess Reservoir Recreation

What was once just a plan is now reality: Rueter-Hess Reservoir is open for public recreation Fridays through Mondays, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., through October. Visitors can fish (with a valid Colorado license) and paddle non-motorized watercraft such as kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards; limited electric trolling motors are now allowed for fishing. Since July 2025, catch-and-keep fishing has been permitted for walleye, largemouth bass, and yellow perch. Swimming and gas-powered boats remain off-limits, since the reservoir is a primary drinking water source.

New Development

Castle Pines is seeing two major projects take shape. Shea Homes’ Canyons master plan continues to expand east of I-25, with several home collections now selling (from the mid-$700s to over $1M) and a proposed expansion of roughly 1,618 additional residential lots, plus a future school site and regional park. Separately, North Canyons Development Company is building Canyonside at Castle Pines, a planned Cherry Creek-style mixed-use downtown east of I-25 with about 2.1 million square feet of commercial space and up to 5,000 residential units; infrastructure work (including realigning South Havana Street and the Happy Canyon interchange) is already underway.
